Background: Born February 19th, 1974. Subaru is the 13th heir of one of Japan's oldest onmyouji families, the Sumeragi, who are in direct counterbalance to the Sakurazukamori clan. When he was 9 he encountered Seishirou, the current Sakurazukamori, for the first time. Seishirou had just killed someone and fed them to the Sakura Grave, which is what the Sakurazukamori does, but instead of killing Subaru he gave him magic brands on the backs of his hands and made a bet with him over whether or not Subaru would be able to make him feel something after one year, with Subaru's life being the wager. He placed a spell on Subaru so Subaru forgot, and 7 years passed without event. When he was 16, Subaru and his twin sister moved to Tokyo, where Subaru ran into Seishirou again but didn't remember him.

Seishirou then went out of his way to befriend Subaru and make Subaru fall in love with him, as per the bet he'd made when Subaru was 9. Subaru was unaware that anything was wrong, despite hints such as Seishirou's surname and his knowledge of onmyoujutsu. At the end of the year, Seishirou lost his eye protecting Subaru from a crazed woman whose son needed a transplant. Due to his crippling guilt and self-esteem problems, Subaru didn't move and Seishirou stepped in front of him.

As a result Subaru finally realized that he was in love with Seishirou, but when he confessed this, Seishirou removed the spell preventing him from remembering their first meeting and told him he'd lost the bet and that he felt nothing, breaking Subaru's arm to prove his point. Subaru then shut down and wouldn't respond to anything, and his sister Hokuto decided that she would take his place meeting Seishirou so that he could live. Seishirou accepted this trade and killed Hokuto, snapping Subaru out of his comatose state when he felt his twin die. Subaru quit school, cut his hair and took up smoking.

A further 9 years passed, with the Apocolypse slowly but surely on the way. Subaru got dragged into joining the Dragons of Heaven (Ten no Ryuu), fighting for humanity, because their leader, Kamui, reminded him of himself. Seishirou was Subaru's counterpart on the side of the Dragons of Earth (Chi no Ryuu). They had several fights where neither of them went all out, and we were lead to believe Subaru's main wish was to get revenge for his sister by killing Seishirou. Fuuma, Kamui's counterpart, destroyed one of Subaru's eyes in a fight, which Subaru didn't stop because he still felt guilty about causing Seishirou to lose HIS eye.

Later on Seishirou and Subaru got into another fight. It turned out Subaru's Wish was to die at Seishirou's hands because then he would mean something to Seishirou, who he still loved. He intended to let Seishirou kill him, but when Seishirou struck the final blow, Subaru ended up being the one with his hand through Seishirou's chest. It turned out that Hokuto's last spell, as she had died, meant that should Seishirou try to kill Subaru, it would backfire. Seishirou had planned for this to happen. He died after whispering something in Subaru's ear which CLAMP has yet to divulge (but general consensus is something along the lines of "I love you" or to similar effect).

After that, Subaru quit the Ten no Ryuu and intended to back out of the war altogether, but after Fuuma brought him Seishirou's remaining eye still in tact and made a convincing offer, Subaru somehow switched out his blind eye with Seishirou's eye, and became the Sakurazukamori as well as the Sumeragi clan head, the role being passed on to the killer of the previous Sakurazukamori. He also became a Chi no Ryuu in Seishirou's place, and has since changed his surname legally.
